Advanced Space Technologies and Experiments in Space

Program Description

The Master's program "Advanced Space Technologies and Experiments in Space" is an innovative educational program of higher education, based on concept “learning through research”. The program aims are development and promotion of advanced space technologies, conduct space research using nanosatellites.

The program focused on:

  • preparation of Masters of space engineering and technology capable of conducting scientific research, solving complex scientific and technical problems,
  • the formation of project work skills, focused on obtaining new results in the field of nanosatellite design and their fundamental and applied applications,
  • the use of advanced space technology (MEMS, GNSS, micro engines, formation flight, materials with memory shape and so on) in space missions.

Currently, nanosatellites are used to solve a wide range of fundamental and applied problems, for example, the study of near-Earth space and solar-terrestrial communications, Earth observation, data collection and transmission from remote terminals, control of maritime navigation and air traffic, etc. That’s why the main types of professional activity are the study, design and use of nanosatellites to solve the problems of space exploration and development of new technological solutions for the space industry.

The program is based on

the principle of "learning through research", which is implemented by the world's leading universities. In the process of training, students are provided with many opportunities for the development of creative abilities in the field of fundamental sciences and engineering problems of astronautics, participation in real space projects. Using the example of a rapidly developing new class of spacecraft - nanosatellites, students have the opportunity to take part in all stages of the creation of high-tech space technology: from the idea of conducting a space experiment to the creation and operating of a nanosatellite. The unique equipment of the Inter-University space research department laboratories give opportunities for students to design and produce all electronic onboard systems, used modern microelectronic and micromechanical technologies in teaching students, provides an opportunity to carry out a full range of spacecraft tests weighing up to 10 kg.

Students acquire skills in the

independent researches, space mission analysis, design of nanosatellites, as well as system engineering, team work, formulation and solution of non-standard scientific and technical problems. During the learning process, students develop the skills of collective project work, focused on obtaining new scientific results and science-intensive technical solutions in the space industry. Students have the opportunity to make presentations at Russian and international conferences, participate in academic mobility programs under agreements with leading universities in Europe and Asia. In the learning process, students widely use modern mathematical packages (Matlab, Mathcad) and specialized computer-aided design systems (SolidWorks, Altium Designer).

Training program includes

with the state standard and includes, along with the professional cycle of disciplines, also a cycle of mathematical and natural sciences, humanities, social and economic disciplines. The teaching staff has a high level of competence and professional work experience. Thanks to the extensive knowledge gained, graduates can find work in a company or scientific organization engaged in the creation of space technology and space research.

After successfully completing a master's program and defending a dissertation, graduates receive a state-recognized master's degree in space science and technology.
